The current swine flu (H1N1 Flu) epidemic is cause for great concern. It is too early to tell, but this epidemic has the potential to become a worldwide pandemic, causing millions of deaths.
Dr. Zubair Saeed, Pandemic Influenza Educator at the Fairfax County Health Department has been conducting outreach to Muslim communities in Fairfax County for several months now. He will be doing a 20 minute presentation on swine flue during which he will discuss:
- The differences between seasonal flu and pandemic flu
- The current swine flu epidemic
- How a pandemic will affect your community
- What needs to be done to prepare for an influenza pandemic.

I think this is a good idea! It’s important that the Muslim community is made aware of what is going in the world of health, and vice versa. Also, how many of us have thought about the prohibition against eating swine? The flesh of pig was deemed haram for Muslims for a good reason. Wikipedia all of the diseases and illnesses that have “jumped” (trans-species) from pigs to humans and it makes sense why this creature would not be fit for consumption.
